I’m an uncle now, and couldn’t be happier about it. Little Reese Elizabeth was born on May 1st, and I was able to visit my sister, brother-in-law, and the little one over the weekend. After relaxing, and getting used to holding a baby (which I had never done prior to this… I used to hate kids), we took some pictures. Applaud the Impaler

Recently shot local metal band, Applaud the Impaler (http://www.myspace.com/applaudtheimpaler), who has recently signed to Unique Leader. So congratulations, guys! You’ve earned it. Had a blast with them, and they found an incredible location. Found an old train car, found our way inside, and took a couple pictures. Unfortunately, it was apparently a restricted area, so after a little while Navy police came and told us we had to leave. Bummer.

Self Hate

So, those who know me also know that I tend to hate just about everything. Tonight, out of boredom and a need to pick up my camera, I decided to write down a list of things that popped into my little brain that I hate. And you know what? It was hard. It’s always harder to make a list of things on demand.

This semester has been way too hectic for my liking, and has pretty much zapped any chance I’ve had to use my brain creatively. BUT, now that’s over, and hopefully I can get back to shooting at least a little more regularly. Man am I rusty…

Anyway, here’s an assignment I had for a final. I had to create a deconstruction of a famous image. I decided upon Paul Strand’s “Blind Woman”. Enjoy.

So, a completely different shoot was lined up for last night, but due to misinterpretations of when each person was available it did not happen. Well, that didn’t stop me from shooting something last night. Some friends and myself decide to kick off a beautiful night with a nice little cookout. Pork chops, brats, and chicken were on the grill, beers and cigarettes in our hands. Oh, and a camera in mine as well. Check it out:

Finally, some new work.
No hidden meaning. No real agenda. Just something that’s been lingering in my head. Basically one shot. I did super-impose just a little more of the orange cloud into the picture, but that’s it.

Rodent Problem

While I was able to borrow some lights – courtesy of Nathan Novak – I thought I would kill some time and play around with them. I decided to go ahead and shoot a self portrait, which I never had attempted before. Nothing crazy, but I can dig it.

1 AlienBee 800 to my left
1 AlienBee 1600 to my right
2 work lights behind me to light the wood.

Due to a lack of creative juices flowing, and being incredibly preoccupied with other aspects of life I’ve decided to post an old image. Still one of my favorite pictures I’ve taken, probably just personal bias and it’s not really that good, but oh well. Lighting was provided by a tungsten lamp. Enjoy.

Flour + Water = Zombie?

It’s been a while since my last post, and no good reasoning behind this except that it’s spring. Every spring I tend to lose focus on whatever I’ve been focusing on for the rest of the year. In this case, photography. My creative juices stop flowing, my camera collects dust, and my mind rots, all while I take in the beautiful weather, drink beer, and hang out with my friends. Thank God for school, and it’s assignments, right?

This shot is the result of trying too hard to think, listening to an abundance of Pulling Teeth, Integrity, and Ceremony, and playing Resident Evil 5. The “makeup” is just what the title of this entry implies; A nice mixture of flour, and water slathered all over my model’s face, and just a smidgen of fake blood for the inverted cross. The lighting was done with two Alien Bee AB800’s, both with 40 degree honey-comb grids, if I remember correctly. One on camera-left, almost directly on the side of my model. The second, placed camera-right, was elevated to about 7 feet, and placed right, and back so it shined down at about a 45 degree angle to the subject.
